I remember being sixteen and at a coffee shop with my friends when we realized that the man across from us was masturbating while staring at us. Being young and scared we ran away and tried to laugh about it, even though it was nauseating and traumatizing. At the time it didn't even occur to me that it was something worth reporting. I feel like from a young age we are made to view this behaviour as part of everyday life, something that just comes along with being female. This way of thinking is obvious once you engage in conversations on this topic with other young girls; everyone has a story, most of us have more than one. Sometimes the sheer number of these stories desensitizes us from the reality of these unwanted sexual advances, cases of harassment, and assaults. This ideology needs to change. Teenage girls should never be made to think that sexual harassment is a normal part of growing up.
